Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development suggests that children move through four different stages of intellectual development which reflect the increasing sophistication of children's thought Each child goes through the stages in the same order, and child development is determined by biological maturation and interaction with the environment. Sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years): Children learn through their senses and actions. Preoperational stage (2 to 7 years): Children use symbols and language, but have difficulty with logic and perspective-taking. Concrete operational stage (7 to 11 years): Children can think logically about concrete objects and situations, but struggle with abstract ideas. Formal operational stage (11 years and older): Children can reason abstractly and hypothetically.
