What is the difference between British and American vowel sounds? There is a greater difference in British English between the length of vowel sounds, with some being pronounced significantly longer than their American counterparts. Some of this is owing to the additional pronunciation of ‘r’ in many American vowel sounds as seen above.
What is the difference between British and American English?British English is much more frontal; it uses the lips a lot more. By contrast, American English speakers move their lips less. The lips are more relaxed and the mouth is generally wider. In American English, sounds generally come from further back in the mouth, closer to the throat.
Why is the T in “often” pronounced with a T?As you might guess, the t was pronounced in the past, when the word began as a variant of oft (also spelled ofte in Middle English), which was the more common form until the 1500s. Oft is now archaic for most of the senses of often, but is still used in compound adjectives like oft-repeated and oft-quoted.
