You are eligible for Medicare if you are a citizen of the United States or have been a legal resident for at least 5 years and: You are age 65 or older and you or your spouse has worked for at least 10 years (or 40 quarters) in Medicare-covered employment. In some cases, you can be younger than 65 and receive benefits if you qualify by disability, have end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Have received Social Security or RRB benefits on the basis of disability for 24 months. Have end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
