Structural heart disease is more likely when the murmur is holosystolic, diastolic, grade 3 or higher, or associated with a systolic click; when it increases in intensity with standing; or when it has a harsh quality. Chest radiography and electrocardiography rarely assist in the diagnosis of heart murmurs in children.
What does a heart murmur feel like?A typical heart murmur sounds like a whooshing noise. According to the American Heart Association, it usually feels like a very subtle extra pulse. Heart murmurs are common, especially among young children. They are usually normal and are called innocent heart murmurs.
What causes a heart murmur?Valvular heart disease is the most common cause of a heart murmur. Valve stenosis – a narrow, tight, stiff valve, limiting forward flow of blood. Valve regurgitation – a valve that does not close completely, allowing backward flow (a "leaky" valve). The abnormal changes to the valve cause the abnormal heart sound (murmur).
